In the Euro 2000, another shootout was this time to favour Italy, in the semifinal against the co-hosts the Netherlands. After his retirement as a player, Zoff went into coaching, joining the technical staff at Juventus, where he was head coach from 1988 to 1990. In 1990 he was sacked, despite winning the UEFA Cup. He then joined Lazio, where he became president in 1994. In 1998 Zoff was appointed coach of the Italian national team.

Using a more open and attacking style than usually used by Italian sides, he coached Italy to a second-place finish in Euro 2000, suffering a cruel extra-time defeat at the hands of France in the final, when in the 90th minute of the game, Italy were 1-0 up and less than sixty seconds from winning the tournament before France scored to equalise and go to extra time. A few days later Zoff resigned, following strong criticism from A.C. Milan president and politician Silvio Berlusconi.

Zoff returned to Lazio, but resigned following a poor start to the 2001–02 season. In 2005, he was named the coach of Fiorentina. But after saving the team from relegation on the last day of the season, Zoff was let go.

how would Italy do?

In essence, the teams we face there go South Korea- Chile/Slovenia- England/Germany- Argentina/Spain. In reality, we actually play Paraguay, New Zealand, and Slovakia in the group stages, and then probably the Netherlands/Cameroon. After that, we could face Spain or Brazil, depending on how we do in the group stages.

So do you think this is easier or harder than the real World Cup format? It’s definitely riskier, as one loss eliminates you, whilst in the group stages, you can lose once and still progress (usually) by winning the remaining two games in the group. It’s also a shorter tournament. If you win all games and make it to the final, you play 5 games total, whereas in reality you have to play 7 games to make it to the final thanks to the group stage. On the other hand, you could argue that this is more exciting since every game is high risk.

Personally, I like football as it is. Sure, this NCAA style might be riskier and thus more exciting, but the group stages are a little better at rewarding consistency. Afterwards, the knockout rounds are basically the same as these, but I feel it might be a tad bit more fair having group stages first, where an unlucky or fluke loss won’t be as harmful.

Marco Tardelli

Marco Tardelli (born 24 September 1954) is a former football player from Italy, and is the current assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland. He played defensive midfielder with Juventus and the Italian national team. He was part of the Italian side to win the 1982 World Cup and was five time Italian Serie A champion. He was well known for his battling qualities, primarily his stamina and mentality as well as his ruthless tackling. He was also known for his technical abilities and his ability to score vital goals.

Tardelli was born at Capanne di Careggine, in the province of Lucca (Tuscany). He started his career in the Italian Serie C with the club of Pisa. Two years later he played in the Serie B with Como before joining Serie A giants Juventus in October 1975.

During his decade-long stint at the Turin club, he won three European competitions: the UEFA Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup and European Cup as well as five times the Italian Serie A championship and three Coppa Italia (Italian Cup).

He scored the decisive goal during the first leg of the UEFA Cup finale against Athletic Bilbao, allowing Juventus to gain this competition in 1977, his first and also the first European title for Juventus.

Tardelli played 376 games with Juventus and scored 51 goals.

Italian Championship

The Italian Football Championship was the most senior football championship in Italy from the 1897/1898 season to the 1921/1922 season. In that last season, a concurrent championship, the Prima Divisione, was played by the richest clubs, which wanted to improve their income with a more elitarian league. The division system was generally adopted by FIGC in 1922, seven years before another reform which replaced the divisions with the series, creating the Serie A championship for the 1929/1930 season.

The championship, unlike Serie A was for most seasons, structured with many local groups. The winners of each of these groups went on to a playoff with the eventual winners being declared champions. Inter President Massimo Moratti believes his side’s victory over Chelsea was important and that the role Lucio played was immense.
